Tax revenue

Enbridge’s presence in the community fuels quality of life through ongoing tax revenue. In 2020:

  • Enbridge paid $60.7 million in property tax across Alberta for our pipelines and related facilities, such as terminals, storage facilities and pump stations.
  • Enbridge paid $19.2 million in corporate income tax across Alberta.
  • On a national scale, Enbridge paid $332.6 million in property tax, $373 million in corporate income tax, and more than $1.3 billion in other taxes (including carbon tax, payroll tax, fuel tax, and excise tax) across Canada, for a total of $2 billion.

This revenue can be used for schools, infrastructure (roads and bridges), health and wellness, recreation, transportation and other services that help strengthen the fabric of the community.

Economic spinoffs*

Enbridge’s ongoing operations, and planned projects, continue to stimulate local and regional economies. Through procurement spending, we’re helping to create indirect employment, support local businesses, and establish economic spinoffs. In 2020:

  • Enbridge's capital expenditures in Alberta, on such items as pipe steel, equipment purchases and replacement, system integrity-related investments, and capital leases, totaled $435.2 million.
  • Enbridge's operating and administrative expenditures in Alberta, such as maintenance costs, equipment leases, power consumption, and field personnel salaries and wages, totaled $1.54 billion.
  • Across Canada, our capital expenditures totaled $2.27 billion, while our operating and administrative expenditures totaled $3.7 billion (including expenditures by our natural gas utilities).

Our workforce

Enbridge’s people live and work in communities like yours as colleagues, neighbors and friends. In 2020:

  • Enbridge’s workforce included 3,710 Alberta-based permanent and temporary employees, and provisioned contractors, at year’s end;
  • Enbridge paid more than $371.8 million in base salary to our Alberta-based permanent and temporary employees—much of that injected directly into the provincial economy; and
  • On a national scale, Enbridge had a cross-Canada workforce of 8,422 permanent and temporary employees, and provisioned contractors, at year’s end, and paid more than $772.8 million in base salary to our permanent and temporary employees in Canada.

Community investment

Enbridge is committed to supporting and strengthening the communities near our pipelines and facilities, and being a good neighbor means the world to us.

  • In 2020, Enbridge invested $4,921,860 in community-strengthening initiatives across Alberta—and supported numerous not-for-profit agencies in the state—aligned to our three focus areas of health and safety, environment, and community.
  • Across Canada, Enbridge invested more than $17 million in communities near our pipelines, projects and facilities in 2020, supporting initiatives that focus on health and safety, environment, and community.
  • Enbridge’s various employee-driven United Way campaigns across North America raised $6.4 million in 2020. That total, which includes employee donations, special events, and corporate matching, will help sustain community outreach, poverty reduction, and educational initiatives being coordinated by United Way chapters near Enbridge’s projects and operations.
  • During 2020, Enbridge made a deliberate effort to advance our community investment dollars to respond and provide relief to the most vulnerable among us in the face of COVID-19. We worked closely with our community partners to identify where resources were needed most—including food banks, social service agencies, mental health organizations and first responders. Our employees pitched in by sewing cloth face coverings, 3D printing masks and organizing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) drives for health-care providers.
  • In January 2021, we launched the Fueling Futures program, unifying our approach to corporate citizenship and the ways we energize communities through corporate donations and strategic partnerships, sponsorships, and a robust employee volunteering and giving program.
